Women, Culture & Society: The Video

“So at least, take a moment, to put the phone down, and admire the beauty again that’s right in front of you.”

Context

This video was shot from my holiday on the cruise ‘Harmony of The Seas’, last August 2016. I travelled with my family, and other family friends around Europe to Spain, France and Italy.

What?

Most of the shots used in this video had featured a phone, or a camera and throughout were polaroid pictures of the pictures that were actually taken at the time. The whole video was in the perspective of how I view and see things as a woman, and how I appreciate the world. This was to emphasise the point of “capturing the moment”. At the start of the video, the Stewardess asks me “You’re filming?”. I deliberately put that cut there to accentuate the “capturing the moment” aspect throughout. I also included some playful shots to show off the ‘Vlog/Travel’ genre that I was aiming for to suit the theme of my blog. The shot of me going down the slide was there to represent, that initially although the video was taken to show off the slide itself, within context, I wanted it to represent how society is falling because of the influence of technology. Towards the end where most of the shots that were taken all on rewind. Symbolically, I wanted this all to show how sometimes our society may wish to turn back time and appreciate the moment whilst living in it, not making sure to capture every moment allowing the beauty behind it to be blocked out because of the devices we have access to now. Which is all something that we should consider to make life worth living.

Why?

The intention of this video was to highlight the fact that in the society we are in now. It has always been about “capturing the moment”, and how technology has become a brick wall that ‘hides the beauty right in front of us’.

How?

This video was shot through my GoPro where I used it to video every move I made whilst travelling. I just also happened to capture the moments where I was blocking the GoPro camera with my own phone camera to take pictures. If you had noticed, throughout the duration of my holiday I was using three devices, a DSLR Camera, my GoPro and also my iPhone. Originally, I had thought that capturing the moment and to get loads of pictures for the memory was the best idea, although in the next blog post “Women, Culture & Society: Spoken Word/Short Story” it all sums up my personal reflection through spoken word of what it was like growing up and being surrounded by toys and appreciating the outdoors, to then evolving into technology infested society.
