What is this year’s #BasicStarterPack?!

*Warning! Offensive language may occur*

In this generation, everyone is involved with what goes on in the media as the majority of our resources are all technological. All we do is soak in the content that we see online and accept it just as it is, which means that most people that are involved in the internet world have all become robots. Looking the same. Acting the same (by trying to be different without realising that everyone strives for that same goal in life). Having the same interests. All of which best describes what ‘basic’ is.

Urban dictionary defines ‘basic’ as:

Screenshot of the term 'basic'.

The term ‘basic’ (I think) derives from the social media platform, ‘Tumblr’, which is a blogging site I believe is used mainly by ‘hipsters’.

A BASIC definition of 'hipsters'

As a result, all the hipsters would go to Tumblr as it is not as mainstream as the other social media platforms. I so happen to be in that category, which explains why I’m mentioning Tumblr quite a lot. As every other person has experienced, we’ve all had our phases. I’ve had plenty.  But it was the decision to be a ‘hipster’ and to not ‘fit in’ in society, or to ‘fit in’ with society.

So whilst you get the hipsters doing their best to be original you have the other stereotypes which are…

  • The Minimalist
  • The Original Tumblr Girl
  • The Thug Lyfe Stereotype
  • The Emo
  • The Pastel Emo
  • The Vintage-Is-Everything Stereotype
  • The Feminist
  • The sWaGgY Stereotype
  • The Smoke Weed Everyday, 420 Blaze it Stereotype
  • The ‘Basic Hoe’

Many of these stereotypes are easily distinguished by the kind of feed that they have on their blog.

Back to the topic… Whilst girls see other pretty girls, it makes them want to be pretty resulting in wearing a lot of make-up, acting a certain way, doing certain things, listening to particular music genres, and ‘loving themselves’ (by taking 1,000 selfies) etc. Basically, it can be mistaken that most people on Tumblr all try to be original but turning out to become the same.

In social media, ‘starter pack memes’ have also evolved, which the hashtag #BasicStarterPack then also became a thing.

The 'basic' starter pack(In case you haven’t already guessed, ‘starter packs’ are a collection of pictures that relate to a caption.)

Besides Tumblr, Snapchat another social media platform (mentioned in my previous blogs), has also been classed ‘basic’ because of the dog filter which mainly girls commonly use and get called provocative names because of the filter of a selfie.

With the increased amount of internet consumption, the majority of the users are all becoming like one another, meaning that eventually people will look and act the same because of what they see on social media. Women seem more easily influenced and motivated to look and feel beautiful because of the internet. But because of the lack of originality in today’s society, it makes those people who follow trends ‘basic’.

On the other hand, what about the perspective of the females classed as ‘basic’? Women have their sets of reasons to why they follow trends. Perhaps to feel included in society. Or maybe, it is because of this gender segregation, and how this gender inequality makes them feel not a part of a community?

Overall, women get classed ‘basic’ for following the trend. Maybe classed ‘hipster’ for not. Either way, the female plays a huge role in today’s society, because whatever they do, it draws attention regardless anyways!

  1. This is such a relevant post in regard to the use of social media today. ‘Starter Packs’ annoy me, but they seem to be found funny by many other people.
