I blame my environment

Now you may have noticed or you may have not.
Fear, not Maryiam Sanyang has noticed and I’m about to bring it to light, throughout my childhood and my teenage years being dark skinned was not the “Bees Knees” and it wasn’t the most desired attribute in an ideal woman.
Now you can understand my confusion when I was born a dark skinned female who was called all sorts of names such as “Blick”,”Midnight”,”Darkie” and many other nonsense phrases. Fast forward in time I am 20 years old and those insults have been thrown out the window, I am now being hailed for my skin tone, the richness of my skin. When I post a picture nowadays the comments underneath are “Queen”, “Melanin”, “Chocolate”, what happened to be quite insulting to me which isn’t a nice feeling but it what I was accustomed to so now this dramatic change in perception has shocked me. In a way, I have social media to thank but at the same time, I have social media to blame as this once wasn’t the reality to the point where my own family back home have been brainwashed and would instill in their darker skinned kids that being fair skinned was the definition of beauty.
