The world has always been obsessed with celebrities however it seems that nowadays you cannot turn on your phone without being bombarded with celebrity culture. The high consumption and demand of celebrity culture is the only reason the press constantly report on the famous. Social media has now become a routine in most of our lives. We wake up and the first thing most of us check is networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat etc. But not to just check on what our family and friends are up to but also to see what our favourite celebrities are doing. Social media has never been so significant to those whom are famous. It holds the power to make or destroy a celebrity’s career.
Are the Kardashian’s really as stupid as they are made out to be?
Although you are probably fed up of hearing the ‘K’ word. The Kardashian clan are the best example of celebrities which have used the power of social media to their full advantage. Without the media the Kardashians would not have risen to the fame they now hold. The Kardashian family’s net worth is reported to be around an astonishing $3.3 billion built through the brand they have created. Social media has played a huge role in advertising and marketing their TV show across the world. Furthermore if you follow either of the Jenner sisters you will notice they cannot go an hour without posting a selfie or picture of their glamorous lifestyles. They use their social media accounts to advertise a lifestyle which is to be desired in order to sell their branded products. Kylie Jenner for example has recently bought out her own makeup line which has proven to be a staggering success with her main source of advertising being through Snapchat and Instagram. Although some of us can be accused of attacking them, surely they must be doing something right to have a net worth that high?
Why do we all fall for it?
It used to be that people would have to buy a magazine to read the celebrity gossip but now the press have made it free and easy to access everywhere. Celebrity culture can be consumed at any time in any place as many magazines have been forced to move with the times and create online social media content. Although the famous are just ordinary people through social media they are made out to be so glamorous, they are rarely photographed in tracksuit bottoms and if they are they are shamed for it. The famous are viewed as of an almighty status which for some bizarre reason we cannot read enough about. Isn’t it all harmless though? After all, we all want what we can’t have and through reading about the lives of those who are famous gives us a sense of escapism.
