Here is what you need to know about cosmetic surgery and social media.
Cosmetic surgery is surgery to improve appearance rather than for health reasons. Examples of cosmetic surgery would include:
- Breast Enhancement: Augmentation (A fancy word for greater or larger), Lift, Reduction
- Facial Contouring: Rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job), chin, or cheek enhancement
- Facial Rejuvenation: Face lift, Eyelid Lift, Neck Lift, Brow Lift.
- Body Contouring: Tummy Tuck, Liposuction,
- Skin Rejuvenation: Laser Resurfacing, Botox, Filler Treatments
So what is the difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery?
Presumably, like me, you may have thought cosmetic and plastic surgery were the same. Which isn’t wrong, to some extent, but there is a difference.
Plastic Surgery is defined as reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease. Plastics surgery is aimed to correct dysfunctional areas of the body and reconstruct them.
So, the one of the differences is that Cosmetic Surgery is mainly for enhancements. Plastic surgery is designed for reconstruction of the face or the body. Similarities, which they share, is that Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery the end result is change. There is a clear change of physical appearance after surgery.
The Link Between Cosmetic Surgery and Social Media
Cosmetic surgery allows individuals to change facial or body features, but how does social media seem to have an effect on cosmetic surgery? A survey from the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery had seen a 31% increase in the patients requesting surgery, in order to look better online.
Social media is ultimately our platform to portray ourselves as how we want everyone to see us. We try and control the content that we reveal on our social media profile, for example, we may share a location or we may upload a group picture, however, you may not be a fan of this group photo so you decide to hide it on your profile. Done it many of times, no biggy! (read It’s Time to take a selfie!? for more on selfies and the effect on social media).
This is because social media allows us to see the imperfections that we may not like and we want to change. It may not be the main reason for why an individual may want to have surgery, but social media does contribute.
