The Horrific Truth Of Hunting
In this blog I will discuss the disgusting culture of those who trophy hunt and why this ‘sport’ should come to an end.
What is ‘Trophy Hunting’?
Definition: “A specific and selective legal form of wildlife use that involves payment for a hunting experience and the acquisition of a trophy by the hunter.”
What’s Wrong With It?
According To ‘In Defence Of Animals‘:
- “Hunting is a violent and cowardly form of outdoor entertainment that kills hundreds of millions of animals every year, many of whom are wounded and die a slow and painful death.”
- “Hunters cause injuries, pain and suffering to animals who are not adapted to defend themselves.”
- “Hunting destroy animal families and habitats, and leaves terrified and dependent baby animals behind to starve to death.”
- “Quick kills are rare, and many animals suffer prolonged, painful deaths when hunters severely injure but fail to kill them.”
- “Hunting is often called a ‘sport’, to disguise a cruel, needless killing spree as a socially acceptable activity.”
- Rare animals have the greatest value and a lot of animals being hunted are endangered.

Therefore this is inhuman and the fact that people view it as a ‘sport’ is sickening. Many hunters go on to keep animals body parts as their ‘Trophy’ or sell them for high value money. Psychologists suggest that this is the same behaviour many serial killers possess. Even more sickening is that in the age of social media hunters decide to post picture’s and selfies with the corps of the majestic creators they murdered.
Roger Moore – “Hunting is a coward’s pastime”.
Popularity:
According To ‘In Defence Of Animals‘:
- 200 million animals are hunted yearly.
- 60 percent of U.S. public land permit hunting.
- Celebrities such as the new President, Donald Trump, support animal trophy hunting.
Media Attention:
Jani Actman highlights in her article that there was one incident which cause a epidemic towards change. This was the death of Cecil, the Lion; who was murdered by a Walter Palmer, a dentist, in 2015. This event took place Zimbabwe. Cecil was known by a lot of locals and visitors for being harmless and friendly. Cecil died in pain 11 hours after the first arrow hit him.

“Lions have declined precipitously in the wild, down from an estimated 200,000 continent-wide a century ago to about 20,000 today.”
The news went viral instantly and many people came together through social media to protest for Cecil and hunting in general. “I think it’s arguable that this is the biggest global response to a wildlife story there’s ever been,” says Wildcru.
Action:
This lead to countries such as Austalia and France creating laws to ban hunted trophies to be taken across their boarders. Also many airlines banned the importation of trophies, including British airways. Lastly, the United States introduced lions to the ‘Endangered Species Act.’
Although this is a very minor change for a cause that needs action now!
