Intro:
So far this blog has introduced the concept of toxicity. It has explored it by looking at the LGBT Community, Youtube, Gaming and Fandoms. However there have been no tips on how to avoid it generally on the internet. So here are the Top 10 Ways to Avoid Toxicity Online.
1. If you ain’t Smilin’ it ain’t Worth While in.
If you aren’t happy in a situation, be that a group chat, a youtube comment section or a forum, then leave it. The purpose of these services is to entertain and create enjoyment. If they are not fulfilling their purpose, you have no need for them in your life.
2. Should I stay or Should I go?
The previous tip is much easier said than done, especially if you do enjoy the forum, and it is about subject you are interested in. The most important thing to remember is to put your safety and wellbeing first. Try reporting the people displaying toxicity to the moderator and they may be able to sort something out.
3. Don’t Feed them After Midnight.
No not gremlins, Trolls and replace after midnight with ever. Arguing with an internet troll will get you nowhere, they want you to bite and get angry with them. They want a reaction. If you starve them of attention, sooner or later they will go away.
4. Block.
If it is just an individual targeting you, then block them. No body likes to actually block people but if someone is being truly toxic, a block will stop any contact they have with you, cutting them off at the roots.
5. Blast them with Happiness.
Be happy, when they are trying to tear you down, there is no better response then complimenting them. They are so used to hate, a continuous stream of compliments will throw them off. Tell them they are really good at the game. Tell them you love them. Tell them you wish them luck in the future.
6. BE NICE.
All these tips have been for people experiencing toxicity, but it is possible for the reader of this to be someone that is toxic. This may be on purpose or by accident, the important thing is to recognise it and stop it. If you feel yourself getting angry or ‘Tilted’ then take a break from the internet, you may need some time to cool down.
Last words.
Toxicity is a choice, spread happiness and together we can eliminate hatred. It starts with the individuals, but it can grow into a movement. Teach the youth of today that being an ‘asshole’ isn’t cool, or funny, or even clever. It just makes you an asshole.
