Welcome to my first blog post. I know full well that you’re staring at the screen right now thinking – why on earth have you chosen politics. WELL TO THAT I SAY its because as something that impacts us all its great to understand how digital communications have affected such an important issue (I in no way wanted to have the advantage of having Trump mentioned to get readers…). We have a lot to get through so lets just start with a basic look into what happened – I have plenty of time so i’m sure I’ll get round to covering a lot during my time of blogging.
The UK and the US. As two nations that act as siblings and imitate each other; we seem to try and act so differently to each other (when deep down, we are bros). From an outside perspective, the US prefers a show. To make whatever is happening – entertaining. It feels as though they have given us EVERYTHING entertainment from Social medias to Television personalities. Yet in Politics we like to show that difference. just to show that change we can look at each retrospective General Election that has recently happened.
Different Styles
Within the UK we had a main battle between the conservatives and Labour political parties; with UKIP, SNP and a few others dabbling. across the pond you have two huge groups headed by two massive personalities, much like a rock and a hard place. the focus is on completely different individuals. This link shows a vidoe of clips that demonstrate how Trump and Obama handle issues during a debate:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFnhq5awB60
This link was pretty much one of the first found whereas, looking for the UK equivalent provides nothing –
I know it may feel a bit long winded but all I’m trying to do is demonstrate how campaigning is nowadays. The US feels like it enjoys having the show made for the public, which deep down we all love. contemporary society lives on smart devices, so it could be argued that by creating content like this is easier to consume. it is simply far more entertaining and shareable! With nearly half a billion ‘cell phone’ users globally, Its easy to understand this viewpoint.
In the past campaigning felt much more like you had to connect with the people to get your point across. It didn’t matter what you said post election as it was too late, you just had to ‘reel everyone in’. much like technology, politics has had the chance to evolve as well. if i had to be honest? I commend that. Sure they have people help them but the difference is the generation. As a 20 year old; I grew WITH tech. These older guys have had to learn. so yeah, commendable. I mean we all know what watching our parents try and choose a ringtone is like. In all honesty I prefer the effort rather than someone like Theresa May who just fell into the position, but I’ll save that for another day.
Maybe this is why they do it? We – the younger generation is very tech literate. By being conscious of this, a whole new herd of voters will be available to tap into.
Maybe one day Britain will see more of these ‘characters’ taking part.
