People can be whoever they want to be online.
This may seem like the most obvious aspect of online dating to criticise, but it’s still a pain. From the women that lie about their weight to the men that lie about there income, online dating makes it all possible.
These are pretty insignificant white lies to tell in the grand scheme of things. There are people in the online dating world who are married with 3 kids. The worst part about these lies is that you’ll probably never know they’re lying. When people meet in the real offline world, at work or through a friend you know parts of their life automatically. It’d be difficult to pretend you didn’t have a spouse at the office when people have known you for years. But on Tinder, there are normally no mutual friends. Two people are essentially strangers. All you can really do is take their word for it. Isn’t the first lesson kids learn in school all about stranger danger?
Why does a liar lie?
Well, it’s all down to the simple fact that humans are insecure. Add that to the fact that there’s A LOT of stiff competition on dating sites and there you have the answer. People lie to give themselves more of a shot. It’s not like people don’t lie in the offline world because of course that’s not true. But online dating gives a user a unique opportunity to be who they want to be, so people take it. According to a study people usually tell small lies in online dating because they’re still likely to meet with each other in person. This same study also showed that Women lie most about their weight whilst men lie most about their height. However, people were most honest about their age, even though many profiles have very out of date profile pictures.
