Ok, if you’ve never heard of Uber, you’ve either been living under a rock or you live in an extremely remote area of the world. Uber is a car service providing a safe and private experience which is on-demand from the touch of a button on their app, available on the Apple App Store, on Android most other mobile devices. Uber is also available online from any internet browser.
Founded in 2008 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, Uber is an easy and efficient way to hail a cab without having to run outside into the rain while jumping up and down to try and catch a driver’s attention. Uber provides sustainable and flexible way for drivers to earn an income, by delivering food, parcels and of course people, it’s easy to see how this new transport phenomenon has blown up, but also how it’s putting your local taxi company out of business.
There is no doubt that Uber have put a strain on local companies which we all knew would happen. One victim, ‘Yellow Cab’, the largest recorded taxi service company in the city of San Francisco, California has recently made it publicly known that since the recent burst in popularity from car service hailing companies like Uber, they have had to file for bankruptcy protection which really does show how much suffering has been caused due to this newer form of private transport service. The company ‘Yellow Cab’ also gave reasons as to why the public were beginning to favour Uber’s services over theirs. ‘Yellow Cab’ claim that, people were opting for companies like Uber and Lyft due to their more convenient routes and cheaper fares. These car service hailing companies are tracked through the app providing people with up to date information on who is in the area to pick them up, which would arguably be quicker and more efficient than calling a taxi from it’s rank which could be on the other side of the town. Moreover, with the evolution and modernisation of the internet, opting to request a car from an application available across many different mobile device platforms can be an easier option for the younger, more tech savvy generation, rather than phoning up a taxi company and waiting to be answered to while a multitude of other customers who are trying to call in as well.
Unfortunately, San Francisco isn’t the only only city being engulfed by the likes of Uber, New York has been targeted too and whether or not people think it presents benefits or not, surely this can’t be the end of the iconic ‘New York Cab’?! ‘Medallions’, New York’s yellow cab currency, which is required in order to operate one of New York’s most famous attributes have now plummeted by a whopping $670,000 which is resulting in a major loss for the world’s most famous taxi service. It has to be said that Uber has managed to conquer all the biggest and most famous cities in the world and one by one with target many more one by one, but this only shows that they must be doing something right and completely unique, which will gain the interest of millions of customers yet to come and see what Uber is all about. Uber currently operates in 67 countries, so in another 9 years who knows where they’ll be? Stick around and you may possibly find out.
