In 2012 Taryn Brumfitt was considering her impending boob job. She then thought of her young daughter. Taryn wondered how she would ever encourage her to accept and love her body, having had cosmetic surgery on her own body.
It was at this moment that her journey began. She set up the Body Image Movement which aims to end body loathing and spread the message of body loving.
Your body is not an ornament, it’s the vehicle to your dreams.
In 2016, after nearly 9000 pledges on Kickstarter, Embrace premiered at Sydney Film Festival. The social impact documentary explores the issue of body image, following Taryn as she travels the world talking to experts, women in the street and well-known personalities about the alarming rates of body image issues that are seen in people of all body types. Below is the trailer for the film.
This project focusses on women, but it is relevant to everyone. Social media promotes more and more beauty ideals which are impossible to achieve without plastic surgery or extreme dieting. Positive body image is a very rare thing for someone to have in today’s society; everyone has some insecurity about the way they look. Embrace is tackling this, encouraging us to think of our bodies as vehicles rather than objects.
Where can I see it?
This is definitely something to see if you can! Cinemas across the UK are screening the film over the next few weeks. Find your nearest cinema and book tickets here.
