“Hot Chick”!? Excuse me?!

I was scrolling through my social media and I came across this post on my News Feed on Facebook. It was a GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) of the Classical Disney princess film ‘Beauty and The Beast’. The top GIF shows Gustavo saying “It’s not right for a woman to read! Soon she starts getting ideas, and thinking”, and the bottom GIF was of Belle reading to the beast and the beast saying “could you read it again”, with an admiring look on his face.

A friend popped into mind and I wanted to tag that person in the comments section initially and when I opened up the comments section to tag, I started reading the comments below. The comments roughly spoke about the social and historical context of ‘Beauty and The Beast’.

Reading on further down to try and find out more information I saw another comment that grabbed my attention specifically. “Basically, the moral of the story here is that you can score a hot chick…” That small quote from the comment automatically made my blood boil and triggered many emotions for me.

Urban Dictionary online defines “hot chick” as “a very attractive female…” (2010). When someone is referring to looks and not on anything else they would use the term “hot chick”.

Men using the term “hot chick” to define women proves how they only have an interest in attractive women rather than anything else.

When the respondent replied to the original comment “you poor creature”, he said “I know. But I made a few people laugh!” It goes by to how men feel more vocal on the social media as Facebook (for example) as it is a public platform where people can have a freedom of speech and interact with those that has similar opinions, or completely disagrees.

Without generalising the whole male gender, some men degrade the opposite sex, in order to lift themselves up on social media. The internet determines self-confidence through likes. Although Belle is only a cartoon character, he classified that female cartoon character as a “hot chick”. Women are not to be scored and prizes to be won. Rather, women should be classed as individual people, just as men can also be classified as “hot dudes” ;-).
