RIP old friend.

NEVER HEARD OF VINE?

Vine was a mobile distributed app with over 40 million users, which allowed them to create videos of a maximum 6 seconds long. What started off as a small element of the mobile video industry, soon turned into one of the most popular apps causing endless hours of participants watching their loop counts, ‘revining’ and sharing their posts to all who wished to watch.

Although just recently, the app (which Twitter decided to acquire just after its release) was shut down, four years after its launch. Many of the videos are still available to watch, however the uploading element has been eliminated.

The app allowed users to capture moments wherever they went, causing the simplest of scenarios to make the biggest impacts online

TELLING A STORY IN A HEARTBEAT

During its years of service, Vine created and began the lives of many a star.

Humorous accounts were one of just the many categories of video available however it broadcast some of the most sought-after individuals to come out of the app. After reaching popularity, these particular participants soon began to start sharing their content to other social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube and Instagram, elevating their careers and social standing.

With just a mere 6 seconds to make an impression and a name for themselves, Vine redefined what it meant to become a celebrity through the means of digital communication. People had to make an instant impact if they wanted to avoid being merely scrolled past with just a swipe of the thumb.

“King Bach” the most followed user on Vine

King Bach is a well known Internet personality who gained 16.2 million followers on the app. His short 6 second videos mainly consisted of him and his friends in funny wacky settings. However his videos gained a worldwide presence and soon he had celebrities such as Kendall and Kylie Jenner featuring in them, a clear example of the spread that the app reached. Proving how elevated their lives could be after an app with quite a simple set-up, this portrays the influence created and the reputation that each user can receive if they reach a certain amount of following.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4JZowcbP7Y

(For more vines from KingBach or other vine stars then head over on over to Funny Vines: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd07rKJ7Q0pg5ths7Pz8k8Q)

Now even though the app that rose him to fame is now shut down, KingBach does not seem worried stating on Twitter “Vine you shall be missed. Instagram and YouTube will raise me now”. Vine clearly created a new breed of Internet celebs and without the use of social media they have nowhere to go.

THROWING CELEBRITIES THREW A ‘LOOP’

The days where your talents such as acting, singing, writing gave you fame and status are gone, instead society is left with the industry of social media. How many followers you have matters, how many people you can make laugh counts in the world, if people stop and watch you as they search through their news feed then essentially you’ve made it. With the videos being a brief 6 second, the concept that they can reach such high profile careers is astonishing.

“While Vine and its select set of superstars have different goals – some want fame, some fortune, some a creative outlet, some the freedom to experiment – they are all using their internet stardom to launch themselves, and, in this sense, they are all products of the 21st century.”

BROOM BROOM

Tish Simmonds is one of many Vine stars who soared to stardom over her clips, even having to resort to wearing wigs and having to get her mum (a frequent member of the Vines) to wear a disguise, just so they could go about their days in a typical ordinary fashion.

Now if you’re not a fan of Vine then you may not have heard of her videos. Does the phrase: “I’m in me Mum’s car” resonate with you?….still no? Then take a look at the clip below too see what she shared.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G86UyUmr99U

(For more like this, check out VineTV: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgfMmTDbx9IEwRDq5hXZppQ)

Her clips were turned into memes and used worldwide and she even inspired others to create their own clips. However this soon turned sour and Tish received the backlash that often comes from Internet fame and celebrity status. In an interview she divulged that “There are a lot of fake Twitter profiles by people pretending to be me. It makes me feel a bit sad because some people are saying I’m thick.”

Vine gave a new meaning to the term internet star. Bright eyed and bushy tailed, these people didn’t have a moment to lose or a spare breath to take as they had to leave their digital footprint within just a small window of time. Although it is in no way a traditional mode of addressing fans or creating a base for a celebrity career, it can be said that the ability to make people stand up and pay attention to you with just 6 frames in your pocket is a truly impressive way that digital communication is being used to acquire fame.

After all, we all just want to leave an impression these days, and if you can do it in just 6 seconds online, then who can say you haven’t succeeded?

It wouldn’t seem like it, but a lot can happen in 6 seconds.
