People forget that they are normal people who just happen to have a talent which they share with the general public.

“Celebrities put their pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us.”

Celebrities are not there to serve. They don’t owe their fans or their audience anything except enjoyment and a performance from whichever industry they belong to. This is the thing they offer to the public. The concept that they willingly wish for people to take pleasure from.

However…

Groping. Kissing. Hugging. Cameras shoved in faces. Or any other inappropriate action that happens to them (trust me there are some shockers!) is not what they owe us at all.

With celebrity culture becoming a part of typical daily life and the scrolling through their Instagram, Twitter and various other social media accounts from morning to night becoming the norm, societal manners and cues are binned and basic human decency is forgotten. In this day and age, celebrities are placed on a pedestal, they are people of awe and wonder that fans can only view from their screens and connect with through the internet.

WHEN FANDOMS AND THE INTERNET COLLIDE

Now of course fandoms existed way before the internet arrived, except when an obsessed fan developed a crush on Elvis Presley in the 60s they couldn’t then post endless collages of ‘I heart Presley’ and proceed to send threatening tweets and messages to any other person who dared go near him.

The internet has seriously accelerated the notion of fandoms and fan groups to the point where explicit content posted by supposed devotees leads celebrities to have to delete their social media accounts just to escape it.

At what point is the line crossed?

It starts to become slightly scary and dare I say cultish when fans go that one step too far and place their fervour and energy on the wrong thing or often worse, the wrong person.

When twitter was established in 2006 the wall between celebrities and their fans was knocked down and the effect can be described as controversial.. to put it lightly. Fans and their idols could now connect on a far more personal level and for many this was an opportunity to express their love and gratitude, however for others, they saw an opening to send abuse and venom.

Extreme Internet fandom has become one of the strongest forms of attack. Instant communication is one of the greatest notions of social media until it comes to fan groups. With a barrage of information constantly churning, once something has been posted or tweeted it’s out there for all to see and the result is anything but subtle or mundane. The Internet has provided an outlet for young teens and other fans to feel like they are a part of something, however when that something glorifies extreme obsession and unprecedented rampages, it’s time to take a step back and question how much does celebrity culture truly need fandoms.

A knot has been formed between social media and celebrity and it’s time to start thinking about untangling it.

They’re groups of people so frightening, so intimidating, they’ve driven grown people to actually delete their social media accounts. Their passion for the artists and people they love can often be inspiring.
