Memes have created a new platform that allows the public to share their political beliefs and opinions. This new era of freedom of speech has lead to political figures falling victim to the almighty meme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/beyonce-meme-suprise-bitch-nK9QnEvlPjwfC\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/i.giphy.com\/nK9QnEvlPjwfC.gif\" width=\"358\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Has our unhealthy obsession with memes actually effected the US presidential election? It seems that they aren\u2019t just funny tad bits that make us LOL, and are in fact much more powerful, having a direct effect on the US election. This 2016 election season has seen memes seriously shape candidates branding and popularity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/i.giphy.com\/2YYVgOOiHUG4M.gif\" width=\"561\" height=\"385\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Memes are more than just funny images or hash tags, they have a serious influence on todays millennials. During Donald Trump&#8217;s inauguration on Friday the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0there was an immense backlash in memes. Historically this would have been a treasonable offence &#8211; with many joking\u00a0about\u00a0his death. The viral memes of Trump that constantly harassed\u00a0everyone\u2019s social media news feeds during the election period\u00a0mimicked his outrageous acts and statements. He was presented\u00a0as a sexist, crude, shifty man by the public &#8211; however he still won the election and is now America&#8217;s President &#8211; a scary thought. So it is interesting, yes although our new way of expressing opinion through memes has casted\u00a0him as this villain by highlighting how hideous he really is, yet the majority of US citizens still\u00a0voted for him. This was the first election in which candidates actively pursued memes for\u00a0tactful campaign promotion. Memes could provide a simple viral way for electoral candidates to reach the majority of online users. As\u00a0memes represent opinions and common cultural beliefs, when candidates create them unbeknownst to the public, it means that the view shared in the memes are\u00a0accepted as is is\u00a0believed that it was \u2018one of them\u2019 that created it, and do not feel manipulated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Hillary Clinton took advantage of this with her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aoXDe8HxHBA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Queen of Memes&#8217; spoof ad<\/a>, created by Super Deluxe who used a Hillary look a like, the funny and extremely cringeworthy video went viral, reaching 5.4 million views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/hillary-clinton-dab-mike-diva-l2Jeai4sW0NCl4cla\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.giphy.com\/l2Jeai4sW0NCl4cla.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">From a brief overlook it seems that this video had no direct links to her campaign but after a bit of snooping I discovered that she had actually paid for it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/broad-city-hillary-clinton-3osxYaxgK8bSjOzJf2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.giphy.com\/3osxYaxgK8bSjOzJf2.gif\" width=\"510\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheeky buggar<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Overall our obsession with memes both have and haven&#8217;t\u00a0been incredibly instrumental in the 2016 president election. They have let\u00a0the public see\u00a0a more clear, truthful image of politicians and has revolutionised our once repressed freedom of speech,\u00a0making it\u00a0acceptable to openly share our\u00a0own political opinions. Memes have made the election much more light hearted and comedic, criticising and poking fun at electoral candidates. They are\u00a0obviously very successful at spreading information virally across the social network \u00a0for candidates to invest in them as a marketing strategy. However can memes be seen as\u00a0meaningless funny opinions and jokes?
