Time to pick a brain…

22/01/2017 by marigonabucinca Leave a Comment

Tonight’s post is something different.

I was fortunate enough to be joined by a successful young lady (Grace) who was willing to take time out of her busy schedule and answer a few questions on the topic of women empowerment and the influences of social media, specifically in regards to the younger generation.

After having a background chat, we had a cup of tea and decided to tackle these questions. In the interview Grace shares her opinions on women empowerment, stating

Modern society lacks it…. due to jealousy and other’s being envious

Explaining that she feels instead of women picking each other up, there’s a lot of jealousy and wishing unhappiness onto other women, mostly because of the content that we see on social media.

We further discuss, the importance of positive body images and enhancing body confidence especially within the younger generation of girls in contemporary society. With unrealistic body ‘goals’ and photo editing software, it is easy to feel like you’re not good enough and that you’re not beautiful because your physique doesn’t fit the criteria that society has created!

It was a pleasure speaking to Grace and allowing me to pick her brain on a topic that is clearly important to the both of us.

I hope you all enjoy the interview, check it out now on soundcloud!

Self Esteem and Social Media

20/01/2017 by marigonabucinca Leave a Comment

As nervous as she was; this intelligent 15 year old, Sarayu Chitiyala, speaks on the pressure the younger generation (predominantly young girls) have to present this ‘perfect image’ due to the encouragement from social media. Mentioning the importance of ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ as well as her stating she fought as she felt she was bullying herself with self criticism instead of practicing self-love at such a crucial period of her life.

Right now there is a constant desire to compare lives, looks and life experiences because of other people’s accounts. We should all remember, the content online that we see, is simply what the author’s want the audience to see. With all the editing programmes it is easy to manipulate a photograph in more ways than one.

We should not get lost in the virtual world, because that is simply what it is – not real. Even though the positive effects of social media and the internet are tremendous and very efficient, there are also negative aspects we all have to take into consideration, especially when practising self growth. It is not healthy attempting to copy the lives and paths of those we follow online. Create your own path and strive in your own success, everybody has a purpose on this earth, use others as inspiration for your own plans, not as a product of the exact same path.

“Why can’t ‘run like a girl’ also mean win the race?”

19/01/2017 by marigonabucinca 80 Comments

Participating in sports activities is seen mostly as a ‘male hobby’. Now don’t get me wrong, there are many amazing female athletes in contemporary society and in my opinion they do not get praised enough! However, according to a progress report from the Government Equalities Office in 2015:

48% of girls aged 7-21 think getting sweaty from taking part in sports is unfeminine, and nearly one third of boys think that girls who are sporty are not very feminine

They’re still too young to be taken seriously, right?… WRONG!

The younger generation are the future of this world, therefore their opinions play a crucial role in society. Phrases such as “you run like a girl” and “you throw like a girl” can seem harmless when you’re 8 years old at school playing catch with your crush, nevertheless they construct this idea that ‘like a girl’ is not good enough.

Taking apart the previous quote, my confusion lays with the statement from the young girls. what the progress report then continues to say is that

23% of these girls report not participating in exercise because they are unhappy with their body image

So imagine being 7 years old and feeling body conscious, the thought alone sends goosebumps down my spine. When we thinking of 7 year olds, we think innocent care free children. Dealing with such issues can lead to very low self esteem or at times self harming. Through the use of the internet, as it is so easily accessible in this day, advertisers should remember their audience is always larger than expected. Youtube clips, adverts on TV and advertisements on the sides of buses and buildings can catch the attention of many, regardless their age. Down below is the Always campaign ‘Like a Girl’ with the aim to raise awareness regarding the use of ‘Like a Girl’ as an insult.

In order to make positive changes, we have to make sure the stereotypes that are so loosely used in everyday dialogue, are not encouraged amongst the older generation first and foremost, as well as teaching young minds that although we live in a world where a female is not always valued as much as she should be, changes have been made and will hopefully continue.

#SORRYNOMAKEUP…?

19/01/2017 by marigonabucinca 75 Comments

Apologising for being natural?

I’m sure everyone has days where they feel like dressing in their best clothing, and making more of an effort on their appearance, and that is okay. Sometimes we have days where our appearance is not a high priority or we simply don’t care, and that is okay too. However what is NOT okay is the new hashtag trend I have recently seen on social media #SORRYNOMAKEUP.

Jessica Robertson using #sorrynomakeup enjoying a glass of wine… don’t be sorry Jess!

Since when is it ‘normal’ to apologise for the natural beauty you have been blessed with? With such great exposure to ridiculous trends such as these on popular social media sites such as Instagram, do we really have to wonder why majority of the younger generation are trying to alter their appearance at such a young age.

If you are like me, and are tired of witnessing articles and trends that tell what you are doing wrong, have a look at this facebook page I came across today with amazing posts, giving us that extra boost of confidence reminding us to embrace what we have been gifted with, regardless to what society tell us.

New Year, New You?

As we have entered the new year, how many articles have you read on ‘how to look your best in 2017’ or skin care and body goals. Well I will tell you, we are 18 days into the new year and I have read ALOT of the same articles telling me my chubby belly should be “left in 2016” along with my not so perfect skin and frizzy hair.

2017 Resolutions

If you haven’t already made any new years resolutions it’s not too late to jot down a few. Maybe a goal you really wanted to achieve in 2016 but never got round to doing so, or perhaps there was a place you wanted to visit, a dress you wanted to buy but had doubts about. If anything, write this one resolution down: DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

When those butterflies in your tummy are having a field day due to the happiness and excitement you are feeling, don’t we just love that feeling? Promise yourself and us that 2017 will be the year of you. We wish you all the success, happiness and upmost joy in the new year!

Remember to stay BEAYOUtiful xx
