Fur was one of the first forms of clothing and we can see why, it provided us with the same warmth and protection that it did for the animals it belonged to. The fur was also often a bi-product of hunting, another necessary way to survive. However in the modern day we have no need to utilise the skin or fur of other animals and a very small amount of the population still hunt their own food for personal consumption. Leather and fur is not a bi-product of the meat industry, the animals are bred specifically for the purposes of clothing. In a world with pleather and faux fur It raises the question why would some still choose the crueler option.
One example of how cruel the leather and fur industry can be is with the company UGG
The Kardashians are one of the most famous families in the western world. While they provide no true talent to the world it is hard to find someone who hasn’t at least heard of them. While they are often in the news for controversial topics one of the most discussed is their persistence to wear fur in the 21st century. Not only does their individual purchases of fur fund the continuing cruelty to animals but it also gives a message to their millions of followers on several social media sites that it is okay to do so.
Three images like this were shared on Kim’s Instagram account gaining over 2 million likes between them.
Using Instagram as her medium Kim posted these photos not so long ago. The reality tv star is sporting a fur bikini, which of course got her in many headlines. This is a perfect example of the power of social media and how, in the wrong hands, it can be destructive. While controversy is, intelligently, what keeps them on top; forced controversy that causes suffering is wrong. However social media can be used to protect those without a voice as much as some use it to harm them.
